The brief for this poster asked me to address a human rights issue with personal significance. Drawing on my Russian heritage, and a family with relatives in both Russia and Ukraine, I chose to take on the war and the unreliable, propagandistic media coverage surrounding it.
Having family on both sides of the conflict made its coverage deeply personal, so rather than aiming at a single source, I wanted the poster to question the media from every angle. A figure with a television for a head represents how coverage can replace what people see for themselves. A quote from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, contrasting Russia's "military operation" with the reality of genocide, is split into three parts across the poster, allowing the gap between the official story and the truth to unfold as it is read. Cyrillic lettering and rough print textures ground the piece in the region, and give it the urgency of a protest poster.
PORTFOLIO
The poster transformed a personal connection into a call for viewers to look past the headlines, and to think critically about where their news comes from.
